Cooking Gone Bad

Has anyone else ever had a pyrex dish explode before? Patrick took the dish out of the oven and set it onto the stove. And BOOM! Neither of the burners had been turned on so I have no clue why the darn thing expoded, but glass went flying! Scared the heck out of both of us!!! I'm just glad neither of us got cut or burnt. Patrick stepped on a sliver of glass but nothing bad. The only thing I can think of this that maybe the glass had a flaw in it? I dunno...

It may have had a flaw... I know glass sometimes does that when it goes from hot to cold.

The old high school science lessons come into play - when things are hot, the molecules are farther apart, and when the are cold, they are closer together. So going from hot to cold quickly could cause the glass to shatter.

I have had that happen to me, but not with a pyrex.

I am so glad you guys are alright. That would have scared the mess out of me.

Wow! That is scary to hear of something like that happening; thank goodness no one was hurt with all the glass going everywhere! I've never heard of that happening before; how odd!

Wow I'd be e-mailing Pyrex and letting them know about that, scary glad to hear all was ok.

The only time I have ever heard of this happening is when there is too much difference between the temp inside the oven and outside. Was it much cooler in the house than usual?

Not really, I had our heater set on 70 degrees so it wasn't too cold in the house. But I don't know...

Yes, it happend to me. I went to clean a hot pyrex bowl and I put cold water in it and the darn thing exploded into a gazillion pieces. It was at my mother-in-laws house and it was her bowl....whoops.
